Safe Methods for Isolating Platform Controls on MEWPS

The RTITB recently advised that the HSE in collaboration with IPAF has released updated guidance on the safe isolation of platform controls for MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms). The guidance addresses the potential hazards of isolating controls while working at height and reflects changes in machine standards and designs to enhance operator safety.

Instructors and Operators are urged to prioritise the selection of appropriate machines for each specific task and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation.

Conversion Training – what can I do?

Further to our blog on conversion training earlier this year, the RTITB has produced a conversion matrix to show the trucks that you can convert from and to (see link below).

RTITB-Conversion-List Nov 2024

‘Conversion to’ course options are not always applicable. There has to be significant similarities in the skill and knowledge requirements between the truck that an operator is converting from, and the truck that the operator is converting to.

Conversion training is a one day course for one trainee or two days for two/three trainees.   If we haven’t trained the candidate previously, we will need to see a copy of their certificate of training on the first truck for our audit purposes with RTITB (these can be e-mailed to us).

There are many different scenarios so if you are unsure on the type of training you require, please contact us on 0800 024 8084 or e-mail anne@stackerstraining.co.uk.

Giving the Horton Hospital a Lift!

We were delighted to appear in the Autumn edition of the Oxford Hospitals Charity Magazine – Torch and also receive this lovely certificate as a thank you for our fundraising this year.

Thanks again to all who attended our forklift experience sessions and to our instructors for giving their time and expertise.

We plan to hold another experience session in Spring 2025 so please get in touch if you’re interested in attending.  Email anne@stackerstraining.co.uk or call 0800 024 8084.

Forklift Experience raises funds for Horton General Hospital, Banbury

On Saturday 28th September 2024, we held a forklift experience session at our training centre at Apollo Park, Wroxton, near Banbury.

We would like to thank everyone who attended this event and we are delighted to have raised £360 for the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Two candidates decided to have their experience on the reach truck and three other attendees drove the electric counterbalance truck.  They all did some basic steering exercises and transported some loaded boxes.

If you are interested in attending a future forklift experience session, or know anyone who would be, please contact anne@stackerstraining.co.uk or call 0800 024 8084.

Training in Stratford upon Avon

One of our instructors has recently been providing training on the pedestrian stacker in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire.

The customer’s premises is situated quite close to the Stratford upon Avon canal. The canal is 25 miles in length and runs from Birmingham’s suburbia to Shakespeare’s Stratford.  The canal joins the River Avon at the Bancroft Basin in Stratford, where a pretty park and waterfront paths are overlooked by the famous Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

We have also been training on the counterbalance truck in Norwich, Kidlington and at our training centre near Banbury during the last couple of weeks.

For more information on where we train, please call us on 0800 024 8084 or e-mail anne@stackerstraining.co.uk

Classification of pedestrian stacker trucks for training purposes

We’ve had several enquiries lately for training on pedestrian stacker trucks.

The Accrediting Bodies Association (who include RTITB) have categorised pedestrian stackers into 3 different groups for training purposes and these are as follows:

  • A low level stacker is for trucks that only lift up to 300 mm.
  • A medium/eye level stacker is for trucks that lift up to 2999 mm.
  • A high level stacker is for trucks that lift above 3000 mm.

The course durations vary for each category so please contact us for more information on timescales, etc.

If you are unsure of the lifting height of your pedestrian stacker, please check the capacity/rating plate which should be in a prominent position on your machine.

Car Parking at our Training Centre near Banbury

We have recently erected some new car park signs at our training centre at Apollo Park, Wroxton, near Banbury.

As you come into Apollo Park, turn left at the mini roundabout and you’ll see our training centre ahead on the right.  If you come up the slope and turn left, then left again you’ll see the car park spaces and the new signs.

Training in Daventry

Last week one of our instructors was training on the counterbalance truck on customer premises in Daventry.

Daventry is a market town in West Northamptonshire, close to the border with Warwickshire.  In 2021 it’s population was approximately 28,000, making it the sixth largest town in Northamptonshire.

The Moot Hall, shown in the photo below, is a Georgian property built in 1769 and now a Grade II listed building.  It has seen a variety of occupants over the years – it has been used as the Mayor’s parlour, the Tourist Information Centre, an Indian Restaurant and even a Women’s prison.

Our other instructors were training at our centre in Banbury last week, on counterbalance and reach trucks, and also at a garden centre near Staines in Surrey.

For more information on the courses we can provide and course durations call us on
0800 024 8084 or e-mail anne@stackerstraining.co.uk

When is conversion training applicable?

Conversion training can be carried out when a trainee has already been qualified on one type of truck but needs training on another similar type (eg, rider operated).

For example, a trainee may already have been trained on the counterbalance truck but also needs to drive a reach truck.  Another example might be that a trainee is qualified on a multi directional truck and needs to drive a pivot steer truck.

Conversion training is a one day course for one trainee or two days for two/three trainees.   If we haven’t trained the candidate previously, we will need to see a copy of their certificate of training on the first truck for our audit purposes with RTITB (these can be e-mailed to us).

Trainees would not be able to convert from a Scissor Lift or Cherry Picker to a rider operated truck as there are not significant similarities in the skills and knowledge required to operate both machines.

There are many different scenarios and the RTITB has produced a guidance document for training providers so if you are unsure on the type of training you require, please contact us on 0800 024 8084 or e-mail anne@stackerstraining.co.uk.
